WHAT IS THE ZEBRA DS9908?
The Zebra DS9908 is a family of corded hybrid 1D/2D Barcode Scanners.
The family includes the high density DS9908-HD and the standard range DS9908-SR.
Some of the standard range barcode scanners have an RFID Tag Reader built into the foot of the scanner.
WHAT IS A HYBRID BARCODE SCANNER?
A Hybrid Barcode Scanner can be be used to read barcodes in two different modes.
The DS9908 has a permanent but adjustable base which operates as a stand for hands-free operation.
In this mode the DS9908 typically sits on a desktop and the barcode is presented to the scanner. The scanner automatically reads the barcode.
Alternatively the scanner, complete with base, can be picked up and used as a hand-held scanner by squeezing the trigger.
This also applies to reading RFID Tags using the RFID enabled DS9908-SR.
WHERE DOES THE DS9908 FIT INTO THE ZEBRA EVOLUTION PATH?
Appropriate models of the DS9908 Hybrid Scanner replace the now discontinued DS9808R and the DS4308P.
WHERE IS THE ZEBRA DS9908 HYBRID BARCODE SCANNER USED?
The Standard Range version of the DS9908 and the RFID enabled models are aimed at Retail Applications.
The High Density models are aimed at Laboratory and other technical applications.
IS THE DS9808 HYBRID BARCODE SCANNER SUITABLE FOR EXTREME CONDITIONS?
No. The Zebra DS9908 is pretty tough but it is not suitable for extreme conditions.
The DS9908 RFID enabled scanners can withstand multiple drops from 1.2m (4') to concrete.
This increases to 1.5m (5') for the non RFID models.
The RFID enabled scanners are sealed to IP42. This means that they are protected against objects >1mm, and sprays of water 15º from vertical.
This improves to IP52 for the non RFID models. This rating generally protects against dust.
The operating temperature for all models is 0º to 50ºC.

Code 39, Code 128, Code93. Codabar/NW7, Code 11, MSI Plessey, UPC/EAN, I 2 of 5, GS1 Databar, Base 32 (Italian Pharma).

Some models of the DS9908 have RFID equipment built into the foot of the scanner which can read or write to UHF Tags which meet the EPC Class 1 Gen2, EPC Gen2 V2 and ISO-18000-63 standards.
WHAT IS THE TYPICAL READ RANGE FOR RFID TAGS?
The working distance for reading and writing RFID Tags depends on many factors and thorough testing in real life circumstances is advised.
The Nominal Read Range is 45.7cm (18").
WHAT FREQUENCY RANGE IS USED?
In the EU the Frequency Range is 865 to 868 MHz.
WHAT ARE THE POWER REQUIREMENTS?
All models of the DS9908 need an Input Voltage of 4.5 to 5VDC at 450mA.
WHAT HARDWARE IS INVOLVED?
Some DS9908 hardware conveniently comes in ready to use bundled kits which contain everything required for immediate use.
Alternatively configurations can be constructed from separately available components by combining a DS9908 corded hybrid barcode scanner with a scanner cable and, if necessary, a 5VDC power supply.
WHAT DS9908 SCANNERS ARE AVAILABLE?
There is a wide range of DS9908 corded Hybrid Barcode Scanners.
High Density models are available as a bundled kit with a cable or separately available to facilitate the construction of customised kits.
Similarly Standard Range models come in kit form with cables or are separately available.
Some Standard Range models also come with RFID Tag Readers or can be integrated with CheckPoint EAS equipment.
WHAT ARE SCANNER CABLES?
Scanner Cables are required to connect the DS9908 to a host.
The cables carry power to the scanner and provide a communication pathway with the host.
A range of scanner cables is available. Some of these cables are able to provide power directly from the host computer.
Others need the assistance of an external power supply which is plugged into the cable.
For the DS9908, Scanner Cables are available for working with IBM 46xx, Keyboard Wedge, RS232, USB and USB Power Plus interfaces and also for connection to CheckPoint EAS equipment.
IBM 46XX SCANNER CABLES
IBM 46xx Scanner Cables were developed for the TGCS (IBM) range of POS Terminals. These cables have special connectors.
External Power supplies are not required.
KEYBOARD WEDGE SCANNER CABLES
Keyboard Wedge Scanner Cables plug into the Host Keyboard Circuit using Mini-DIN connectors.
An External Power Supply is required to protect the Keyboard Circuit.
Most modern equipment now uses USB Keyboards.
RS232 SCANNER CABLES
RS232 is widely used with POS Terminals where special connectors may be used.
RS232 is also extensively used as a general purpose connection method.
Most modern RS232 equipment uses a version of RS232 called TTL Serial. This method employs 5V signals.
Some older equipment still uses 12V RS232C signals. RS232 True Converter cables cater for this need.
Most RS232 ports cannot supply power and need an External Power Supply to be connected to the scanner cable.
Where an RS232 port does supply power it is usually through Pin 9 and a special Scanner Cable must be used.
Most modern RS232 Scanner Cables are fitted with a Female DB9 Connector.
USB SCANNER CABLES
Although USB is a rapidly evolving standard there are currently two main types of USB Cable.
USB Type A Cables provide 5V Power and a communication path via a single cable and connect with a single plug.
USB Power Plus Cables have a special dual plug.
External Power Supplies are not required for the USB Scanner Cables used with all models of the DS9908.
EAS SCANNER CABLES
EAS Scanner Cables have additional wires which connect directly to the CheckPoint EAS equipment.
EAS Cables should only be used with EAS configurations.
External Power Supplies are not required.
DS9908 POWER SUPPLIES
Depending on the type of cable used a 5VDC power supply may be required.

The dimensions of the non-RFID scanner are 203mm (8.0") x 94mm (3.7") x 132mm (5.2") (HxWxD).
The dimensions of the RFID scanner are 203mm (8.0") x 99mm (3.9") x 146mm (5.75") (HxWxD).
The weight of the non-RFID scanner is 0.330Kg (0.725lbs) rising to 0.420Kg (0.925lbs) for the scanner with RFID.

Our standard charge for 2-3 day delivery to most locations in mainland UK is £10.
This charge is subject to a weight limit of 20Kg.
For consignments which are heavier than 20Kg we reserve the right to add a surcharge.
