DIMENSIONS AND WEIGHT
The dimensions are 29.2 x 58.4 x 62mm (1.15 x 2.3 x 2.44") HxWxD.
The weight is 0.111Kg (0.244lbs).
DROP RESISTANCE AND PROTECTION
The scanner can withstand multiple 0.76m (2.5') drops to concrete.
It is protected to IP54, which means that it is protected against dust (although some limited ingress can occur) and against water sprayed from all directions.
CABLES AND INTERFACES
Cables are connected to the DS457 via a cable port on the rear of the scanner.
The scanner has a USB interface and a TTL Serial interface.
A range of USB cables is available with low profile female connectors for the scanner end and USB Type A connectors for the host end.
Some of the USB cables come with trigger jacks and beepers.
Similarly a range of Serial cables is available with low profile female connectors for the scanner end and DB9 connectors with a power socket at the host end.
Some of the Serial cables come with trigger jacks and beepers.
For those Serial applications where TTL level signals are insufficient a TTL to True RS232 converter cable is available.
POWER REQUIREMENTS
The power requirement is up to 450mA at 5V DC.
The DS457 with USB cables obtains this power directly from the USB connection.
The DS457 with Serial cables requires 5V DC power. This is provided by connecting a power supply to the power socket on the Serial cable.
READ RATE AND MOTION TOLERANCE
The frame rate of up to 60 per second gives snappy barcode reading.
The DS457 has good motion tolerance which allows the reading of barcodes on moving objects.
RESOLUTION AND READING RANGES
The Standard Range model can read 1D barcodes with bar widths as small as 5mil and Datamatrix codes with cell sizes down to 5mil.
Typical reading ranges are:
- 33 to 206mm (1.3 to 8.1") for 5mil Code39
- 38 to 389mm (1.5 to 15.3") for 13mil ie. 100% magnification EAN13
- 38 to 213mm (1.5 to 8.4") for 10mil Datamatrix
- 38 to 178mm (1.5 to 7") for 10mil QR Codes
- 30 to 259mm (1.2 to 10.2") for 10mil PDF417
The High Density and DPM models can read 1D barcodes with bar widths as small as 3mil and Datamatrix codes with cell sizes down to 4mil.
Typical reading ranges are:
- 28 to 122mm (1.2 to 4.8") for 5mil Code39
- 43 to 211mm (1.1 to 8.3") for 13mil ie. 100% magnification EAN13
- 36 to 94mm (1.4 to 3.7") for 5mil Datamatrix
- 38 to 79mm (1.5 to 3.1") for 5mil QR Codes
- 36 to 97mm (1.4 to 3.8") for 4mil PDF417
TRIGGER OPTIONS
A range of trigger options is available.
1. The scanner read cycle can be triggered by pressing the button on the top of the scanner.
2. The scanner can be free running and in this mode will read any barcodes which come into view.
3. The scanner can be hardware triggered from external equipment such as a push button or photocell.
4. The scanner can be triggered using serial commands sent from the host.
DIRECT PART MARKED BARCODES
The Motorola DS457 is a remarkable Fixed Position barcode scanner.
The Standard Range and High Density models can read barcodes which are printed on paper or displayed on electronic surfaces such as computer displays and mobile phone screens.
The Direct Part Mark model has special decoding software which can read codes which are marked directly on the surface of an object.
The marking methods include using optical lasers to engrave the surface, punching patterns of holes in the surface using dot peening, spraying barcodes on the surface using ink jets, chemically etching the surface using aggresive chemicals and templates, and even moulding the codes into the surface at the time of manufacture.
DPM codes are used extensively in aerospace, automotive and medical applications and indeed in many other areas where permanence and extreme durability are required.

Our standard charge for 2-3 day delivery to most locations in mainland UK is £10.
This charge is subject to a weight limit of 20Kg.
For consignments which are heavier than 20Kg we reserve the right to add a surcharge.
