General Description

The Zebra S4M is a compact and robust Industrial Barcode Label Printer housed in a strong metal case. It has a 4 inch print width and can print tags and labels at speeds of up to 6ips.

Paper Handling

The Zebra S4M prints on die cut labels supported on backing media paper, and continuous media such card tags. The printer is equipped with a choice of two sensors which detect the label edge, holes or slots in tags, and black marks printed on the under surface.

The stationery can be on an outside wound full size 8 inch outer diameter roll, on a 3 or 1 inch core, which is housed within the printer. Alternatively the stationery can be fan-folded and passed into the printer via a slot at the rear.

The Zebra S4M is a compact printer and has no provision to rewind the printed labels internally. The printed stationery projects from the front of the printer.

The printer can be used in "tear-off" mode where the printed stationery can separated by pulling it against a tear bar. Alternatively with the aid of an optional kit the printer can be used in "peel-off" mode.

In this latter mode individual die cut labels can be printed on demand and presented partly peeled from the backing. Again due to the compactness of the Zebra S4M the spent backing media cannot be internally rewound and will periodically need to torn off and removed.

Print Mode

The Zebra S4M is available in Direct Thermal models which can only print on special heat sensitive labels and Thermal Transfer models which print on to stationery by means of a suitable ribbon. The models equipped for Thermal Transfer can print in either way.

When used in Thermal Transfer mode the full size 450M long rolls of inside inked ribbons are housed inside the printer. The ribbon is used once and the spent ribbon is taken up on to a special spool inside the printer. This spool allows for easy removal.

Printing Resolution

The Zebra S4M is available in a choice two resolutions 200dpi (actually 203) and 300dpi to suit the application.

Barcodes, Fonts, Drivers, Label Software and Printer Languages

The Zebra S4M is supplied with Windows Drivers. The printer comes with a choice of four printer languages, only one of which may be installed in the printer.

The first of these is Zebra's EPL which is normally thought of as a printer language for Desktop Printers. EPL has built-in facilities for barcodes, graphics and bitmap fonts.

The three remaining languages can each print barcodes, graphics and, bitmap and smooth scaleable fonts.

ZPL is the main Zebra printer language and is used for the Zebra high performance Industrial Barcode Label Printers.

The third and fourth are emulations of other manufacturer's printer languages.

Zebra's APL-I emulates the 203dpi version of the Intermec IPL language and the Zebra S4M fitted with this language is targetted against the now defunct Intermec 3400.

Similarly Zebra's APL-D is targetted against 203dpi Datamax printers.

The EPL and ZPL versions of the Zebra S4M are supplied with the "lite" version of the ZebraDesigner labelling software.

Communications Facilities

The Zebra S4M is supplied as standard with serial, USB and parallel communications. The parallel adapter fits into the printer's only upgradable slot. In the case of the EPL and ZPL based printers this can be replaced by a Zebranet 10/100 ethernet print server card or for ZPL printers by a WiFi adapter.
