WHAT IS THE DATALOGIC GRYPHON I 4500 2D?
The Datalogic Gryphon I 4500 2D is a family of hand-held wireless and corded 1D/2D barcode scanners.
WHERE IS THE GRYPHON I 4500 2D USED?
Different models of the Gryphon I 4500 2D are aimed at General Purpose or Healthcare applications.
WHERE DOES THE GRYPHON I 4500 2D FIT?
The Gryphon I 4500 2D is a 1D/2D barcode scanner which shares many of the innovations of the Gryphon I 4200 1D scanner.
The Gryphon I 4500 2D is the first Datalogic general duty 1D/2D scanner since the introduction of the Gryphon I 4400.
The Gryphon I 4400 is now obsolete.
The following shows the recommended Gryphon I 4500 replacements for the Gryphon I 4400.
WHAT EQUIPMENT IS INVOLVED?
The Gryphon I 4500 family consists of several separate products.
CORDED SCANNERS
These include the GD4520 and the GD4590.
GD4520 CORDED SCANNER
The GD4520 only works with USB Cables.
GD4590 CORDED SCANNER
The GD4590 Supports Keyboard Wedge, RS232, USB-A and USB-C cables.
OPTIONS FOR THE CORDED SCANNERS

CORDLESS BARCODE SCANNERS
There is a choice of Bluetooth or 433Mhz Datalogic Star Radio communications.
The Gryphon I 4500 cordless scanners require a Charge and Communication Base, which has a cable interface, and a Keyboard Wedge, RS232, USB-A or USB-C cable.
GM4500
The GM4500 is a Star Radio cordless scanner which needs a Star Radio Charge and Communication Base and a cable.
Complete kits are available which include a Star Cordless Scanner, a Star Base Station and a USB-A cable.
Alternatively individual components are separately available for the construction of bespoke configurations.
GBT4500
The GBT4500 is a Bluetooth cordless scanner which needs a Bluetooth Charge and Communication Base and a cable.
Complete kits are available which include a Bluetooth Cordless Scanner, a Bluetooth Base Station and a USB-A cable.
Alternatively individual components are separately available for the construction of bespoke configurations.
OTHER ITEMS

KEY FEATURES OF THE GRYPHON I 4500 2D
The Gryphon I 4500 2D omnidirectional imager has an advanced megapixel sensor with warm white illumination which provides snappy reading of all common 1D and 2D barcodes.
High Density (HD) models are available for smaller, condensed codes.
Dedicated models with red illumination are available to read Digimarc watermarks.
UNIQUE FEATURES
Special features include the Motionix motion sensing technology, the WLS Wireless Charging System and Healthcare infection control capabilities.
MOTIONIX
Motionix motion sensing technology switches the scanner into hand-held mode when the scanner is picked up and held in the hand. The scanner automatically returns to presentation mode when placed on a cradle or stand.
In hand-held mode barcode reading is actioned by pressing the trigger.
WIRELESS CHARGING
Wireless Charging inductively charges cordless scanners when placed on a wireless base station. This process avoids the need for metal contacts and this brings a huge improvement in reliability.
HEALTH CARE INFECTION CONTROL
The Healthcare models of the Gryphon I 4500 2D offer a two pronged approach to Infection Control.
The Gryphon I 4500 2D Health Care barcode equipment can be washed with strong disinfectants.
The casings of some Health Care equipment are made from special anti-microbial plastics.
GRYPHON I 4500 2D OPTICS
Most Gryphon I 4500 2D barcode scanners use a 650nm red laser for aiming and 350-770nm warm white light emission for illumination.
The Digimarc models use 650nm hyper red light emission for illumination.

The standard range Gryphon I 4500 2D models have the following maximum resolutions:
- 1D linear barcodes 4mils
- PDF417 symbols 4mils
- Data Matrix Codes 7.5mils
The HD models have the following maximum resolutions:

READING BARCODES
The standard models of the Gryphon I 4500 2D 4500 can be used with the following types of barcode:

ELECTRICAL REQUIREMENTS
The input voltage requirements depend on the Gryphon I 4500 2D Model and are as follows:
- GD4520 Corded Barcode Scanners 5VDC
- GD4590 Corded Barcode Scanners 4 to 14VDC
- GM4500 and GBT4500 Wireless Base Stations 4 to 14VDC
The GD4520 Corded Scanners can only be used with USB cables. These cables supply 5VDC power from the USB Port.
The GD4590 Corded Scanners work with Keyboard Wedge, RS232 and USB Cables.
Some of these cables are able to supply power from the host computer. Where not available power can be provided by attaching a 12VDC Power Supply to the scanner cable.
Similarly the GM4500 and GBT400 Base Stations also work with Keyboard Wedge, RS232 and USB Cables. The Base Stations can be powered via the scanner cable and these too may require a Power Supply. It should be noted however that the fastest battery recharging can always be obtained by connecting a 12VDC Power Supply to the Auxiliary Power Port on the base station.
BLUETOOTH OR STAR RADIO WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS
The Gryphon I 4500 2D Wireless products offer a choice of Bluetooth or Datalogic Star Radio.
Bluetooth offers an open air range of up to 100m between the cordless scanner and the base station. Star Radio offers a lower theoretical open air range of up to 50m.
The Bluetooth scanner can be paired with other Bluetooth 4 equipment but the working range will depend on the equipment involved.
Where a wireless solution is required using the BPOC software, or reading Digimarc barcodes, this is currently only available using Bluetooth Scanners.
Bluetooth and Star Radio are said to suffer minimal interference.
Star Radio equipment is often used in situations where the Bluetooth spectrum is extremely crowded.
HOW TO CHOOSE A GRYPHON I 4500

CORDED OR CORDLESS?
The first decision you need to make is Corded or Cordless.
Corded models involve a corded scanner and scanner cable.
Corded scanners usually offer the best value for money.
With a corded scanner you are limited is distance from the host computer by the length of the cable.
Cables can be up to 5m long, but trailing cables may present a health and safety issue.
CHOOSE A CORDED SOLUTION
If you prefer a corded scanner and are happy with a 2m (6') USB-A cable we suggest that you go for a black or White GD4520.
NEED A DIFFERENT CABLE?
Bespoke configurations can be constructed with Keyboard Wedge, RS232 and USB-A cables.
If you are connecting to an RS232 port which is unable to provide power on pin 9 you should choose an RS232 cable with an external power socket and add an external power supply.
CHOOSE A CORDLESS SOLUTION
Cordless Gryphon I 4200 scanners come with a choice of Bluetooth or Datalogic Star Radio.
If you might want to pair your scanner with another Bluetooth device then you should choose Bluetooth.
Star Radio is useful if you are working in a very crowded Bluetooth spectrum.
If you are happy with a charging time of around 10 hours then your choice should be a Bluetooth (GBT4200) or a Star Radio (GM4200) scanner kit with the included USB-A cable.
NEED FASTER CHARGING?
Charging time can be reduced to around 4 hours.
If you need faster charging then you should construct a bespoke configuration using a Bluetooth scanner (GBT4200) or a Star Radio scanner (GM4200) with a WLC4090 Gryphon I 4500 Base and connect a 12V External Power Supply directly to the Base alongside the scanner cable.
WARRANTY
The factory warranty period for the wireless Gryphon I 4500 scanner is 3 years and for the corded models 5 years.
REPLACEMENTS FOR THE GRYPHON I 4400
The Gryphon I 4500 2D parts are not mechanically compatible with the Gryphon I 4400.

Our standard charge for 2-3 day delivery to most locations in mainland UK is £10.
