The key features of the Cognex DataMan 100 are as follows:

General Description

The Cognex DataMan 100 is a miniature, camera barcode scanner which reads linear barcodes in any orientation and 2d codes which include poor quality laser engraved, dot peened, chemical stencil and ink jet direct part marked Data Matrix symbols.

Complete Package

The Cognex DataMan 100 comes as a complete package which includes built-in lighting, an adjustable lens which offers three ranges of focal length, a USB cable and a CD which contains an easy to use setup tool which runs on a PC.

Visual Setup Tool

Drawing on machine vision techniques the Cognex DataMan 100 comes with an easy to use visual setup tool which allows you to see the barcode.

This is especially important for direct part marked codes where it is often necessary to adjust the position of the reader to minimise reflected light.

Powerful Barcode Reading

The Cognex DataMan 100 can read UPC/EAN barcodes, Codabar, Code39, Code93, Code128 and Interleaved 2 of 5 linear barcodes, and QR Code and Data Matrix 2d codes.

The Cognex DataMan 100 comes in two models.

The DataMan 100Q comes with the Cognex ID Quick algorithm and offers extremely fast decoding of well formed, high contrast linear barcodes and Data Matrix codes.

The DataMan 100X is equipped with the Cognex ID Max algorithm which is intended for the inherently poor quality direct part mark codes produced by laser engraving, dot peen, chemical engraving and ink jet technologies.

The DataMan 100X can also read 2d QR Code.

Automatic or Manual

The Cognex DataMan 100 has an automatic operation mode which usually chooses the best settings.

In some circumstances it may be appropriate to overide the automatic settings. For example the Cognex DataMan 100 allows you to adjust the light level and exposure time manually.

Many other advanced facilities are available. The Cognex DataMan 100 can be trained to optimise the lighting and to reduce decoding time.

Integration and Communication

The Cognex DataMan 100 offers a range of communication methods and can be integrated into systems via industrial I/O control signals.

The Cognex DataMan 100 comes with a short cable fitted with a special connector which when used with a choice of two add-on adapter cables allows the reader to be used via USB Serial, USB keyboard or RS232.

The Cognex DataMan 100 also has optically isolated input and output industrial I/O ports. These can be used to trigger the reader, control external lighting used in place of the built-in lights, and to signal operational conditions such as good reads.

These I/O ports can be accessed via an optional Cognex DataMan 100 I/O module which can be onwards connected to other equipment. The I/O module also provides USB or RS232 output using standard cables.

Accessories

For your first Cognex DataMan 100 it is best to order a complete kit which includes a USB adapter cable, a mounting bracket, a CD containing the Setup Tool and Drivers, and a copy of the Quick Reference Guide.

With this kit you can very quickly install your Cognex DataMan 100 and test it with a laptop.

If you prefer to use RS232 you can replace the USB adapter cable with a RS232 adapter cable and a power supply.

If you want to take advantage of the industrial I/O ports it is best to connect the reader directly to a Cognex DataMan 100 I/O module and use standard USB or RS232 cables. The wires from external equipment are connected to the I/O ports using screw terminals.

For further installations of the Cognex DataMan 100 fixed position barcode reader you simply purchase the DataMan 100Q or the DataMan 100X reader and the individual accessories that you need.
